3Bedini, The Pulse of Time 1991, S. 4-5, sieht die Entwicklung in einem noch weiteren Rahmen: It is not known who first conceived of the application of the pendulum as a regulator for clockwork. Among the earliest claims is that the Arab astronomer, Ibn Yunis the Younger, had employed a pendulum in his astronomical studies as early as the twelfth century. Surviving documentation confirms that the application to clockwork had been anticipated as early as the fifteenth century as demonstrated in drawings of Leonardo da Vinci and of the master Florentine clockmaker Lorenzo della Volpaia.
